Thakurgaon: President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, during his first visit to Thakurgaon since assuming office, urged political leaders and citizens to embrace a politics of reconciliation to bolster democratic institutions. Addressing a civic reception at Thakurgaon Government Boys' High School field, he emphasized the importance of dialogue and discussion over conflict.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the event was arranged by the Civic Committee and local civil society members to welcome the President back to his home district. President Fakhrul highlighted the need for tolerance and mutual respect, calling for the protection and strengthening of democracy. He stressed the importance of equal rights for all faiths and communities in Bangladesh.
The President announced significant progress in establishing a public university in Thakurgaon, with the land acquired and a vice-chancellor appointed, and plans to lay the foundation stone on Monday. Additionally, he discussed the establishment of a medical college, with student admissions expected to begin next year. Two new upazilas have been formed, with local officials already in place.
Focusing on economic development, President Fakhrul called for increased industrial activity in Thakurgaon to create jobs, highlighting the proposed Shibganj airport as a potential catalyst for business. Efforts to attract investors, particularly in agro-based industries, are underway, with support from the Finance Adviser and Commerce Minister. The President also mentioned potential collaboration with Chinese experts and investors.
President Fakhrul encouraged locals to create their own employment opportunities and urged women to participate actively in economic activities. He announced an overseas recruitment initiative that would allow 10,000 people to work abroad without bearing costs, starting with Thakurgaon residents.
The President called for a strong stance against drugs, urging local officials and lawmakers to take action. He also encouraged local businessmen to unite and invest in the district, assuring them of his continued support.
Reflecting on his roots, President Fakhrul expressed gratitude to his teachers and the people of Thakurgaon for their support. He aspired to see a society founded on unity and mutual respect, recalling a message from former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia about building a society through love rather than confrontation. The reception concluded with cultural performances and a warm welcome from the community.
