Chittagong: The Chittagong University (CU) authorities have suspended Zoology Professor Dr. Mohammad Abdul Wahed Chowdhury for one year following derogatory comments he made regarding the 2024 July mass uprising on social media.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the university has also decided to form an investigation committee to further probe the incident. The suspension was announced during the university's 568th syndicate meeting held last Friday, as confirmed by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Al-Forkan.
Prof. Wahed was accused of posting derogatory remarks, including obscene language, on his Facebook account on June 7, 20, and July 3. These comments triggered significant criticism across the campus, leading the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) to submit a memorandum on July 12 demanding his punishment.
On the same day, a three-member probe committee was established. The committee is headed by CU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Dr. Mohammed Al-Amin, with then-acting registrar Prof. Dr. Mohammad Saiful Islam serving as member secretary, and Assistant Proctor Dr. Md. Kamrul Hossain as a member.
Prof. Wahed, who has yet to receive official notification of his suspension, is known for his pro-Awami League stance on campus. He joined CU's Zoology Department as a lecturer in 2012, advancing to assistant professor in 2014, associate professor in 2021, and professor in 2026. He also served as an assistant proctor from 2021 to 2023.
