Dhaka: Another significant step in the establishment of parliamentary oversight mechanisms was taken with the formation of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Textiles and Jute Ministry. The committee will be led by ruling party lawmaker Md Akhtaruzzaman Mia of Dinajpur-4.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the committee's establishment followed a proposal by Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni. The committee comprises various lawmakers, including the Textiles and Jute Minister, provided he is a member of parliament (MP). The members include BNP lawmakers Md Shariful Alam (Kishoreganj-6), SM Faisal (Habiganj-4), Md Nasir Chowdhury (Sunamganj-2), Md Abdullah (Munshiganj-1), and Rezeka Sultana (Women Seat-36). It also includes Jamaat lawmakers Md Afjal Hossain (Kushtia-4) and Hafez Muhammad Rabiul Bashar (Satkhira-3), as well as Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis lawmaker Mahabuba Hakim (Women Seat-48).
The formation of these committees is a part of the broader process following the establishment of the new Parliament. In total, the Parliament has 50 standing committees, divided into 39 ministry-related and 11 parliamentary affairs-related committees. To date, 26 of these committees have been established, with 19 focused on different ministries.
Parliamentary standing committees are integral to the scrutiny of ministry activities, examination of bills, and review of issues referred to them by the House. They are empowered to seek information from ministries and provide recommendations on issues within their jurisdiction.
The completion of the remaining committees is anticipated in the near future.
