Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman announced on Wednesday that a draft law concerning the use of artificial intelligence (AI) will be presented to Parliament following a thorough review by experts. This comes as the nation grapples with integrating AI into its legal framework, especially in relation to the Cyber Security Act.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the minister emphasized the importance of expert recommendations in drafting the law, noting that necessary provisions would be added or removed based on these insights before the draft is submitted to Parliament. He made these remarks during the closing session of the 'Bangladesh AI Governance Summer School' held at the Asiatic Society in Dhaka.
Minister Asaduzzaman underscored the potential risks AI poses to the judiciary if not governed by a specific legal framework. He urged judges to be vigilant regarding AI misuse and the new risks it introduces. He pointed out that while AI offers numerous benefits, it also presents challenges, such as the ability to convincingly generate false information, alter images, and manipulate voices.
The minister further stressed that AI could influence decision-making and public perception, necessitating a robust regulatory framework to mitigate potential misuse. He highlighted the risks of AI-generated false statements and fake evidence that could mislead the courts, posing challenges particularly for poor and middle-class litigants, as well as new social and legal risks for influential individuals.
Minister Asaduzzaman also cautioned that judges might face AI-driven propaganda if verdicts are unfavorable to certain parties, advocating for a clear legal framework to address these issues. He reassured that the government does not intend to ban AI but aims to ensure its positive application while preventing misuse.
The minister called for collaboration from all stakeholders to draft and submit a comprehensive law on AI to the government promptly. The event was organized by the Society for Justice and AI (SJAI) and Legalized Education Bangladesh Limited, in partnership with Dhaka University.
The programme featured discussions on AI governance across various sectors, including the judiciary, human rights, financial services, healthcare, and public administration. Attendees included judges, lawyers, educators, technologists, and government officials. Certificates were awarded to participants at the event's conclusion.
