Uttara: The Uttara unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) staged a rally to celebrate the party’s 48th founding anniversary. BNP Acting Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi joined the rally as the chief guest, followed by a street march that paraded the thoroughfares of the area starting from the Polwell Market near Abdullahpur and ended at Jasimuddin More, despite the drizzles.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizvi addressed the rally, recalling that 48 years ago, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman established the BNP with several commitments. He emphasized that Ziaur Rahman, an army officer who led the Liberation War, was drawn into politics during a critical juncture in the national life and eventually led the party.
Rizvi highlighted Ziaur Rahman’s role in safeguarding the country’s independence and sovereignty, reintroducing multi-party democracy, and spearheading development and self-reliance campaigns. He pointed out that under the current BNP government, there have been no incidents of enforced disappearances or extrajudicial killings, contrasting this with previous regimes where dissenters’ bodies were often found in rivers and fields.
The rally was presided over by Dhaka-18 constituency MP S M Jahangir Hossain, with Mustafa Zaman, member secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP, also speaking.
