Dhaka: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) marked its 48th founding anniversary with a series of vibrant programmes, social activities, and political events across the country. The party, founded by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, began its journey on September 1, 1978, and has been a significant force in the nation’s political landscape.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a five-day programme was initiated by the BNP to commemorate this milestone. Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman paid homage to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia by laying wreaths at their graves in the capital’s Zia Udyan. The ceremony was attended by members of the party’s Standing Committee and other senior leaders, who offered Fateha and participated in a special munajat for the departed souls.
Prominent figures such as LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, BNP Acting Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and other senior leaders were present at the event. Following the tribute, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, along with party leaders, engaged in environmental activities by planting saplings and releasing fish fry into a nearby lake.
As the day unfolded, a large gathering of leaders, activists, and supporters visited the mausoleum to pay their respects, filling the air with slogans and carrying colourful banners. The celebrations extended beyond the capital, with district and metropolitan units hosting discussions and activities nationwide.
The anniversary holds particular significance as the BNP has returned to power after two decades, with Tarique Rahman serving as Prime Minister for the first time. Reflecting on the party’s journey, BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi emphasized the party’s commitment to democracy and resilience against fascism.
Founded by Ziaur Rahman, the BNP has seen significant leadership changes, with Begum Khaleda Zia taking over after Ziaur Rahman’s assassination. Tarique Rahman, who served as acting chairman following his mother’s imprisonment in 2018, now leads the party.
The BNP’s history is marked by its struggle against dictatorship and its pivotal role in the Mass Uprising of 2024, which led to the collapse of a long-standing regime. The party’s recent electoral victory in the 13th national election further solidifies its position in the country’s political sphere, as it forms the government under Tarique Rahman’s leadership.
