Sylhet: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announced today that modern drone technology is set to revolutionize border management, security, and surveillance in Bangladesh, especially in remote and forest-covered areas. This development aims to address the challenges of ensuring security with personnel on the ground in difficult terrains by implementing round-the-clock digital surveillance using drones equipped with night vision and thermal technology.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister made these remarks at a press briefing after inaugurating the ‘School of Surveillance and Drone Warfare (SSSDW)’ at the Sylhet Sector Headquarters of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Salahuddin highlighted the effectiveness of thermal technology in monitoring cross-border activities, identifying smuggling routes, and preventing illegal arms and drugs trafficking, even during nighttime.
Salahuddin emphasized that the integration of drone technology is not limited to border security but also extends to natural and humanitarian disaster response. He cited recent instances where BGB members used drones for rescue operations in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and to deliver relief materials to remote locations.
The minister revealed that BGB members are currently undergoing training in border surveillance and drone warfare at the newly inaugurated school. Plans are underway to expand the training program to include civilian personnel, equipping them with advanced technology and drone operation skills. Salahuddin assured that the latest global drone technologies would be incorporated into the institution within the next one to two years to bolster national security.
Addressing questions on drug-related prosecutions and disruptions to law and order, Salahuddin mentioned updates to the Narcotics Control Act and enhancements to district-level capabilities with laboratories, lock-ups, dog squads, and modern weapons. He warned that any attempts to obstruct legal processes would be strictly dealt with under existing laws.
The inauguration event featured a welcome address by BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui and opening remarks by BGB Sylhet Sector Commander Colonel Mohammad Salahuddin. The minister also participated in a detailed briefing on the specialized training program and witnessed operational exercises and drone displays by BGB.
The SSSDW is poised to transform Bangladesh’s border security system, making it more modern, information-based, and technology-enabled. The center’s launch marks a significant step towards using modern aerial drone technology in safeguarding remote and vulnerable border areas.
