Chattogram: Formal construction of the Laldia Container Terminal, developed with Danish cooperation, will begin tomorrow as part of efforts to modernize and expand the capacity of Chattogram Port and facilitate the country's foreign trade. A foundation-laying ceremony will be held at 11 am at the project site in Laldia, Patenga, Chattogram.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury will attend the ceremony as the chief guest, while Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Shaikh Rabiul Alam will attend as the special guest. Chattogram Port plays a significant role in Bangladesh's economy, handling the majority of the country's import and export trade. With the growth in foreign trade, increasing the port's capacity and improving container handling have become crucial.
The Laldia Container Terminal project is a major initiative aimed at expanding the capacity of Chattogram Port. The terminal will introduce modern infrastructure and technology-driven management, making port operations more efficient while contributing to the development of Bangladesh's international trade and logistics sector. Developed with Danish cooperation, the terminal will enhance the port's infrastructure and container handling capacity.
The Ministry of Shipping has been undertaking various initiatives to modernize the country's port and maritime transport infrastructure. The project is implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with a total investment exceeding US$550 million, marking one of the largest PPP investments in Bangladesh's history. The terminal will feature a container yard, jetty, gate, and modern cargo-handling facilities.
With an annual handling capacity of around 0.8 million TEUs, the terminal's jetty will measure approximately 615 metres in length. State-of-the-art technology and advanced cargo-handling equipment, including modern ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, will be installed. Representatives from different ministries, Chattogram Port Authority, relevant organizations, business leaders, media professionals, and other stakeholders are expected to attend the foundation-laying ceremony.
