Dhaka: Directorate of Posts has started piloting an entrepreneur-based franchise post office to implement the government's 180-day action plan. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Directorate is also preparing to supply over 312 tonnes of seasonal fruits, integrate digital services, and launch 14 fulfillment centres to provide logistical support in the e-commerce sector.
Officials at the Directorate of Posts have stated that, in line with the election manifesto of the incumbent BNP government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the traditional institution is gradually transforming into a modern logistics service provider through these initiatives. Supervised by the Directorate, seven sector-based activities are progressing simultaneously with aims to create employment, improve service quality, and achieve digital transformation.
The franchise post office model is highlighted as one of the significant initiatives taken to create employment opportunities. The piloting of pickup and delivery services through entrepreneurs has already commenced. Director General of the Directorate, Kazi Asadul Islam, emphasized the transition from traditional postal services to a modern logistics provider. He added that involving private entrepreneurs could remove time and geographical constraints of postal services, creating numerous jobs.
Director Dr. Mohammad Ziaur Rahman explained that contracts would be formed with interested individuals or organizations to handle the collection and delivery of goods. These franchises will operate under direct supervision, with contracts subject to revocation if service quality deteriorates.
Significant progress has been made in transporting agricultural products under the BNP government's action plan. Over 312 tonnes of seasonal fruits have been delivered to customers from various districts. Technical preparations for new services, including sending traffic-related documents via post and collecting postal life insurance premiums through 'Nagad,' have been completed, enhancing customer convenience.
The Directorate of Posts is also modernizing mail processing and logistics services by supplying 6,000 android mobiles, 6,000 thermal printers, and 500 computers to various post offices. The fleet has been expanded with 50 electric bikes and 33 new delivery mail vans received from the Universal Postal Union.
The fulfillment centre initiative is anticipated to have a long-term impact. The setup of 14 centers in various locations, including Dhaka and Gopalganj, aims to efficiently manage product logistics in the e-commerce and f-commerce sectors. Dr. Ziaur Rahman stated that construction is complete, with operations set to begin following administrative procedures.
Officials expressed optimism that the full implementation of these initiatives will enhance the scope and quality of postal services and strengthen the Directorate's position in the digital and e-commerce-based economy.
