Cumilla: Agriculture and Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid emphasized the government's focus on research-oriented agricultural development to create new rice varieties. This initiative aims to counteract the potential decline in agricultural production due to climate change.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Amin Ur Rashid announced that 'BRRI Dhan-118' will be introduced for the haor region in the upcoming season. This cold-tolerant rice variety will facilitate early transplantation and harvesting, enabling farmers to harvest before the onset of flash floods, thereby reducing potential losses. The minister shared these insights during a press briefing following a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at Cumilla Circuit House.
The minister also revealed plans for a new salt-tolerant rice variety slated for release next year. Scientists at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) are actively developing crop varieties to withstand the negative effects of climate change.
Addressing fish export potential, Amin Ur Rashid mentioned the possibility of utilizing Cumilla land port for fish exports, which will be discussed with the commerce minister. Additionally, a feasibility study will be conducted to assess the need for a fish landing station in Cumilla, contingent on the availability of suitable government land.
Regarding consumer preferences, the minister noted that there is a significant demand for fresh freshwater fish. Consequently, the government is prioritizing the development of modern marketing infrastructure alongside preservation facilities.
On the topic of vaccine production for livestock, Amin Ur Rashid disclosed a major project aimed at expanding the current vaccine production center. This expansion will enhance the capacity to produce vaccines for both poultry and livestock, reducing import dependency and strengthening the livestock sector.
Concerning canal re-excavation, the minister confirmed that the activities conducted under the Ministry of Agriculture are progressing on schedule. To mitigate the impact of recent floods, seeds and agricultural inputs have been distributed to affected farmers, and free vaccination programs have been conducted in flood-hit areas to safeguard livestock health.
Joint Secretary of the agriculture ministry Khorshed Alam, along with local government officials, attended the meeting.
