Democratic republic of the congo: Medical evacuations and troop transport have been crucial components of the Bangladeshi Aviation Unit's operations since their deployment in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in August 2003. The unit is a cornerstone of MONUSCO's air operations, regularly performing medical evacuations for Congolese soldiers and civilians in remote areas. According to African Press Organization, on Thursday, July 23, in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province, the MONUSCO Force Commander, Lieutenant General Ulysses De Mesquita Gomes, presided over the United Nations Medal Parade for the Bangladeshi Aviation Unit peacekeepers. This medal recognizes their commitment to implementing the mission's civilian protection mandate in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Receiving the United Nations Medal is a significant honor for the Bangladeshi Aviation Unit, acknowledging their dedication and efforts in promoting peace and stability in the region. Lieutenant Rifah Tania Badhon, a Security Off icer with the unit, expressed that the medal is a recognition of the collective efforts of the contingent. The unit also plays a vital role in transporting troops, equipment, and ammunition to support Force operations, as well as carrying MONUSCO and United Nations personnel throughout the country. In a vast nation like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with limited road infrastructure, air capabilities are essential for civilian protection and peacekeeping. Bangladesh's contribution to MONUSCO's aviation includes Mi-17 utility helicopters and a Hercules C-130 transport aircraft. Since 2003, the Bangladeshi Aviation Unit has completed over 39,000 accident-free flight hours, providing crucial support to mission operations and civilian populations. During the medal ceremony, General Antoine-David Mushimba, Commander of the 32nd Military Region of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, praised the Bangladeshi peacekeepers for their support in Ituri amidst armed group activity and the Eb ola outbreak. He highlighted their dedication to serving the Congolese people. The MONUSCO Force Commander commended the professionalism and dedication of the medal recipients, noting their unwavering commitment despite a complex security environment. Lieutenant Rifah Tania Badhon emphasized that the medal represents the peacekeepers' commitment to humanity and the protection of civilians. The United Nations' acknowledgment of these peacekeepers underscores their daily efforts to provide assistance, security, and hope to communities affected by armed violence in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
