Dhaka:During a meeting at Bangabhaban, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged China to increase investment in Bangladesh and enhance cooperation for the safe and sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar. This call was made during a farewell courtesy visit from outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen.
According to United News of Bangladesh, President Alamgir praised China's constructive role in the Rohingya crisis and emphasized that China's initiatives could significantly aid in resolving the crisis and facilitating repatriation efforts. He also called for increased Chinese investment in sectors such as readymade garments, electric vehicles, and high-tech electronics.
The President welcomed regional connectivity initiatives, including the Kunming-Chattogram corridor and the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor. He highlighted the modernization of Mongla Port and the establishment of the China Economic and Industrial Zone as key to improving connectivity and promoting economic development.
Alamgir also sought continued Chinese assistance for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project and acknowledged past diplomatic exchanges, including visits by former President Ziaur Rahman and his own visit to China. He expressed hope for stronger Bangladesh-China relations in the future.
He thanked China for constructing the Bangladesh-China Friendship General Hospital and sought Chinese expertise for treating blood cancer patients at the Combined Military Hospital. Ambassador Yao assured cooperation in these areas.
Ambassador Yao expressed gratitude for the support received during his tenure and noted the rapid advancement of Bangladesh-China relations, highlighting China's commitment to being a reliable partner to Bangladesh.
President Alamgir commended Ambassador Yao's contributions to bilateral relations and reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to the one-China principle, aiming for further practical cooperation to elevate their friendly relations.
