Dhaka: A delegation of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami today urged the Election Commission (EC) to reconsider the proposed law that would disqualify MPO-listed teachers from contesting local government elections. The demand was made during a meeting between Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin and a Jamaat-e-Islami delegation led by the party's Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar at the EC Building.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Golam Parwar addressed reporters after the meeting, emphasizing that if heads and teachers of educational institutions are permitted to contest parliamentary elections, there should be no reason to prevent them from participating in local government elections. This stance was supported by the presence of key Election Commission officials, including Election Commissioners Abdur Rahmanel Masud and Tahmida Ahmad, and Senior Secretary to the Election Commission Akhtar Ahmed.
The Jamaat delegation included Assistant Secretary General Dr. AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad and Assistant Secretary General and Central Publicity and Media Secretary Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, among others. During the meeting, they submitted a letter containing nine proposals aimed at addressing concerns related to the proposed disqualification law.
