Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today announced significant strides by the government aimed at transforming the police force into a more service-oriented and people-friendly institution by enhancing its moral strength and professionalism. The minister shared these insights while briefing journalists at the Ministry of Home Affairs conference room at the Secretariat, following a ceremony honoring police personnel for their commendable contributions in three recent high-profile incidents across the country.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister highlighted the government’s initiative to reward 15 police members who demonstrated professionalism in recent critical incidents. This acknowledgment is intended to inspire all police force members to be more dutiful, sincere, and committed to justice. The rewarded personnel were recognized for their roles in promptly completing DNA tests and post-mortem examinations, submitting the charge sheet in the Ramisa murder case, saving the lives of at least 50 bus passengers at Daulatdia Ghat, and swiftly solving a previously unsolved teenage murder case in Gazaria, Munshiganj, leading to the arrest of the accused.

The minister emphasized that such initiatives would significantly boost the morale of police personnel. In response to journalists’ queries, he affirmed that the government had successfully overcome the image crisis affecting the police force post-August 5. He stated that the police are now more people-friendly and have regained public confidence. Citing comparative crime statistics for 2024 and 2025, the minister noted a significant decline in the country’s crime rate and considerable improvements in law and order during the current government’s tenure compared to previous years.

Regarding government allocations for police investigations, the minister mentioned that the ministry is actively considering increasing funding to enhance the dynamism and effectiveness of investigations, post-mortem procedures, and police patrol operations. Addressing concerns about action against absconding police officers, the minister assured that no leniency would be shown toward absconding or disciplinary offenders. He disclosed that multiple departmental cases had been filed against the concerned officers, and the investigation process was nearing completion. He reiterated that those facing cases under the ICT Act or the Penal Code would be brought to trial in accordance with the country’s laws.

The ceremony was attended by Home Secretary (routine charge) Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, and other senior officials from the ministry and Police Headquarters. The minister presented certificates and financial rewards to 15 police personnel in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the three notable cases.
