Dinajpur: Police in a drive arrested a fugitive life-term convict in a narcotics case from Khetlal Police Station area of Joypurhat district early Monday. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hakimpur Police Station, Inspector Md. Zakir Hossain, confirmed the matter this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a police team, acting on intelligence information, apprehended Md. Jamal Hossain, 60, who had been evading capture for several years. He was detained at his sister’s residence in the Khetlal Police Station area. Jamal Hossain had been on the run since a case under the Narcotics Control Act was filed against him by Hakimpur Police on November 20, 2011, following the discovery of a large quantity of narcotics at his residence.
Three years ago, the Dinajpur Additional District and Sessions Judge Court sentenced Jamal in absentia to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Taka 10,000. Should he fail to pay the fine, an additional three months of imprisonment was ordered by the court. Despite the sentence, Jamal, son of the late Rafiq Hossain of Madhyabasudebpur village under Hakimpur upazila, had successfully evaded law enforcement.
Police officials have indicated that Jamal Hossain will be presented before the Dinajpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court and subsequently transferred to the district jail.
