Cox’s bazar: The southwest monsoon has officially made its way into Bangladesh through the Cox’s Bazar coast, heralding the start of the rainy season, as confirmed by the local met office. Although the Bengali month of Ashar has not yet commenced, Cox’s Bazar has already experienced significant rainfall, with 62 millimeters recorded over a 24-hour period.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Assistant Meteorologist Md Abdul Hannan from the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office stated that the region is set to experience continued rainfall activity over the next six to seven days. Heavy rainfall has already been observed throughout the area. A weather warning issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, signed by meteorologist A.K.M. Nazmul Haque, indicates the development of deep convective cloud formations over the northern Bay of Bengal, potentially leading to squally weather affecting coastal regions and maritime ports.
Authorities have advised the maritime ports in Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Mongl
a, and Payra to maintain local warning signal no-3. Fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal are urged to stay close to the coast and exercise caution. Observations at Cox’s Bazar Sea Beach revealed rough sea conditions, with tidal waters rising several feet above normal at key points like Laboni, Sugandha, and Kolatoli. Despite these conditions, tourists continue to enter the sea for bathing.
To ensure safety, lifeguards are using loudspeakers to caution visitors, advising them to stay in knee-deep water. Saifullah Sifat, supervisor of Sea Safe Lifeguard Services, reported that red flags have been placed in hazardous zones and lifeguard teams are on high alert to warn tourists at critical beach points.
