Dhaka: BNP Secretary General and LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today acclaimed BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman’s pivotal role in revitalizing the nation from a state of collapse. Fakhrul emphasized that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is perpetuating his father’s developmental vision.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul spoke as the chief guest at a special prayer ceremony and discussion commemorating the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. The event was organized by Bangladesh Bouddha Kristi Prachar Sangha at the Dharmarajika Buddhist Temple in Basabo.

Fakhrul reminisced about the 1971 Liberation War, highlighting Ziaur Rahman’s declaration of independence when political leadership faltered. He praised Ziaur Rahman’s subsequent economic reforms, including market-oriented policies, private investment encouragement, garment industry initiation, and expansion of overseas employment for Bangladeshi workers.

Fakhrul pointed out that remittances, a vital national income source today, originated from labor migration initiatives during Zia’s leadership. He commended Tarique Rahman’s ability to transform personal grief into political strength, uniting nationalist forces.

Expressing optimism about the forthcoming national budget on June 11, Fakhrul anticipated measures to foster a “new Bangladesh.” He underscored the unity during the Liberation War, with people of all religions fighting together, and warned against any efforts to sow division or communalism.

Fakhrul reaffirmed BNP’s commitment to democracy, free elections, freedom of expression, media freedom, and an independent judiciary. The event was chaired by President of Bangladesh Bouddha Kristi Prachar Sangha Ven. Dr. Buddhapriya Mahathero, with State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges and Railways Habibur Rashid Habib inaugurating the program.
