Islamabad: Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has congratulated Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), expressing confidence in his leadership and commitment to multilateralism.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dar extended his felicitations to Dr Khalilur Rahman in a post on his X handle, highlighting the Bangladeshi minister's vast diplomatic experience. Dar expressed his belief that Dr Khalilur's commitment to multilateralism would guide the Assembly effectively.
The Pakistani foreign minister also expressed his eagerness to further engage with Bangladesh at the United Nations. He emphasized the importance of working together to enhance multilateral cooperation, advance shared global goals, and foster dialogue, peace, and sustainable development.
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman's election came after a competitive vote against Cyprus' candidate at the UN Headquarters in New York. Of the 190 votes cast, Bangladesh secured 99, while Cyprus received 91. This victory is seen as a diplomatic success for Bangladesh, showcasing international confidence in its leadership.
Dr Khalilur Rahman is set to assume the presidency when the 81st session of the UN General Assembly begins in September.
