Meherpur: A court in Meherpur has sentenced a man to death for the rape of a 9-year-old girl in Gangni upazila, marking a significant judicial outcome in a case that has drawn widespread attention. The verdict was delivered by Judge Md. Tajul Islam of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the convicted individual, Shakil Hossain, aged 24, is the son of Abdal Hossain from Chandpur village in Gangni upazila. The incident occurred on June 16, 2025, when the young girl, a 4th-grade student, was on her way to deliver food to her father working in a nearby field. Shakil Hossain accosted her, threatening the child before taking her to a secluded jute field where he committed the crime.
Upon returning home, the distressed child informed her family of the ordeal. Her father, Esanul Haque, promptly filed a rape case with the Gangni Police Station. Following the report, law enforcement officials swiftly arrested Shakil Hossain and detained him pending trial. Throughout the legal proceedings, 11 witnesses provided testimony, appearing both in person and via video calls to support the prosecution's case.
The court's decision to impose the death penalty was based on substantial evidence presented during the trial. Public Prosecutor Advocate Mostafizur Rahman Tuhin confirmed the court's ruling, which underscores the judicial system's commitment to addressing crimes of this nature with utmost seriousness.
