Dhaka: Police arrested 32 activists of the banned Awami League (AL) and its associate organizations from the city today. They were apprehended for allegedly attempting to stage a ‘flash rally’ in the city, according to a statement from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, police detained six individuals from the flower market area in front of Agargaon Metro Rail Station under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar thana in the early hours of today. The police reported that a group had gathered there to organize a sudden procession and attempted to disperse when law enforcement arrived. The six arrestees were identified as Shyamal Chandra, 27, Ayatul Haque, 29, Siam, 22, Mehedi Hasan Miad Khan, 21, Tarek Rahman, 22, and Selim Pradhan Shrabon, 20.
In a separate operation after Jumma prayers, police detained 26 more individuals from road no Dhanmondi-32 following intelligence reports of a gathering intending to bring out a procession. All detainees are local political activists of the Awami League, police said, adding that legal proceedings are underway on the allegation of organizing an unauthorized assembly.
