Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) will undergo significant restructuring to become a more people-friendly, professional, and accountable force. Ahmed made these comments during a programme celebrating the 22nd founding anniversary of RAB at its headquarters in Uttara.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening public trust in the elite force through greater public engagement, transparency, accountability, and adherence to human rights, the rule of law, and professional ethics. The reform initiatives aim to enhance RAB members’ professional skills, ensure the minimum use of force in line with international standards, and provide training on human rights and the use of artificial intelligence in crime prevention.

Plans are also underway to establish a specialized training centre for RAB at Jungle Salimpur. Ahmed mentioned that while some officers were involved in illegal activities during the previous regime, the entire institution should not be judged based on a few individuals’ actions. He assured that state institutions will operate without political interference under the current democratic government.

The Home Minister also revealed that the government is considering amending the existing law governing RAB and potentially changing the force’s name as part of broader reforms. Efforts are being made to enact a dedicated RAB law and modernize the force to meet global standards.

The event was attended by Special Adviser to the Prime Minister on Information, Policy, Strategy and Culture Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, Inspector General of Police Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, and RAB Director General Md. Ahsan Habib Palash, who delivered the welcome address.
