Lalmonirhat: A court in Lalmonirhat has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the rape of an 11-year-old schoolgirl in 2016. The convict, Anath Chandra Barman, 42, was also fined Tk 10,000; failing to pay will result in an additional three months of simple imprisonment. The verdict was delivered by Judge Nityananda Sarkar of the Children and Women Repression Prevention Tribunal.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the incident occurred on May 26, 2016. The victim, a fifth-grade student, was alone at her home when Anath Chandra Barman entered and raped her. Upon returning home, her parents found her injured and immediately sought medical attention, first at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital and subsequently at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Following the incident, the victim’s father filed a case at Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station, leading to the arrest of Anath Chandra on June 3, 2016. The investigating officer submitted a charge sheet against him on August 29 of the same year. The court has also decreed that the time Anath Chandra spent in custody during the trial will be deducted from his sentence.
