Chandpur: A Chandpur court has sentenced Arif Hossain Bepari to death for the murder of Wasim Bepari, stemming from a land dispute in 2020. The verdict was delivered by Chandpur Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Kamal Hossain.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the court also imposed a fine of Tk 1 lakh on Arif Hossain Bepari, with a provision for an additional two years of imprisonment if the fine is not paid. The incident, which occurred on June 29, 2020, was rooted in a long-standing enmity between the victim’s family and that of Mizanur Rahman, also known as Balu Mizan.
The prosecution detailed that Wasim, a trolley driver, was hacked to death by Arif Hossain Bepari. His body was discovered by local residents near a bush the following day. The police were informed, and they subsequently recovered the body.
On June 30, 2020, Wasim’s mother, Jahanara Begum, filed a case with the Matlab North Police Station, naming six individuals, including Arif Hossain Bepari, Mizanur Rahman, Azad Bepari, Karim Bepari, Salma Begum, and Kuddus Bepari. The police submitted the charge sheet on May 31, 2021.
After reviewing the case records and testimonies from 25 witnesses, the court found insufficient evidence to convict the other five accused, leading to their acquittal.
