Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today announced that the current government aims to repair the state and society with the involvement of patriots and experts. “And in every phase of this repair, steps will be taken on the basis of national consensus with the participation of all the patriots,” he stated.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Swapon emphasized that the vision for change is not merely about gaining power but about achieving a qualitative transformation in the state’s social system. He delivered these remarks during the opening session of the ‘National Film Council Conference-2026’, organized by the Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies, at the Bangladesh Film Archive auditorium in Agargaon.

As the chief guest, Swapon reflected on Bangladesh’s 55-year history, noting both its triumphs and challenges. He stressed the importance of integrating expert knowledge with the experiences derived from the nation’s history. “We know that it is not possible to ensure quality production unless we can effectively exchange views and connect ideas with experts in all related fields, including film,” he added.

Highlighting the significant role of film as a medium for social change, Swapon urged the state to support those in the film industry driven by passion, patriotism, and a desire for societal welfare. He described this dedication as crucial ‘soft power’ for societal and civilizational development.

Swapon assured that the government will earnestly work to provide optimal opportunities for film workers within the state’s regulatory framework. He also cautioned film workers against becoming subservient to any particular group or ideology, referencing past instances where film was used as a propaganda tool.

He called on all stakeholders to transform the film council movement into an independent, free-thinking body that fosters social change, rather than allowing it to become an instrument manipulated from behind the scenes.

During the event, eminent art critic and film scholar Moinuddin Khaled received a lifetime achievement award for his significant contributions to the film industry. The conference, presided over by Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies President Dr Jahirul Islam Kochi, also featured Bangladesh Film Archive Director General M Javed Iqbal as a special guest. Representatives from various film societies, filmmakers, and researchers attended the event.
