Feni: A construction worker in Feni has been accused of killing a woman and stealing her gold earrings on May 12, as revealed by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). The crime was reportedly committed in a bid to repay loan instalments.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the accused, Saiful Islam, 29, hailing from Chhoshna village under Sarishadi union in Feni Sadar upazila, was apprehended in Chattogram city's Bayezid area. His arrest followed a technology-assisted operation conducted by the PBI.
During a press briefing on Thursday night, PBI Feni Superintendent of Police Ukya Singh disclosed that Saiful admitted to planning the robbery of his employer's gold earrings. This plan was allegedly driven by his humiliation at the hands of loan recovery officials at his home.
On the afternoon of May 12, the victim, Rina Akter, 40, the wife of Saudi expatriate Md Manik Mia, visited their under-construction house in Chhoshna to check on the progress of the work. Seizing the opportunity, Saiful allegedly attacked her, stole her gold earrings, and strangled her, according to PBI officials.
In an effort to hide the crime, he reportedly buried the body under a pile of sand inside one of the rooms of the under-construction building. After fleeing the scene, Saiful sold the stolen earrings at a local gold shop in Mohammad Ali Bazar for Tk 15,000 and escaped to Chattogram.
A PBI team, using intelligence and technological tracking, raided a residence in Bayezid and captured him. A murder case has been filed with Feni Model Police Station by the victim's eldest son against unidentified persons.
