Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has announced the government’s plans to establish an effective and independent Media Commission. The initiative aims to ensure press freedom in the country by building consensus among various stakeholders.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Swapon emphasized that the commission would not impose regulations on the media. Instead, it will be formed through the active participation and input of all relevant stakeholders, ensuring that people’s right to information is upheld. His remarks came during the inauguration ceremony of the online and multimedia news outlet ‘Asia Post’ at its office on Topkhana Road.

The minister reiterated the government’s commitment, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, to ensuring media freedom-a promise made during the election campaign. Swapon highlighted the government’s ongoing discussions with stakeholders since taking office, aiming to create a commission that not only facilitates the free flow of information but also protects the public from misinformation.

Recognizing the times as transformative, Swapon noted the rapid technological changes affecting the global landscape. He pointed out that while older generations may struggle to adapt to the digital age, maintaining the accuracy of information remains a core responsibility of the media.

He also cautioned that the expansion of free information flow has been accompanied by increased opportunities for spreading misinformation and fake news, posing significant challenges. The minister stressed the need for new strategies to tackle challenges, especially those posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI), urging new media outlets to act responsibly.

In welcoming the launch of ‘Asia Post’, Swapon noted the country’s entry into a sophisticated media environment through the integration of online and multimedia journalism. He expressed hope that the new outlet would be vigilant in safeguarding the public against misinformation and meeting evolving expectations.

The event, moderated by Asia Post Editor Palash Mahmud, concluded with the minister formally inaugurating ‘Asia Post’ by cutting a cake and touring its various office sections.
