Dhaka: Reaffirming the government’s uncompromising stance against corruption, terrorism, and misrule, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today directed police officials to treat offenders strictly as criminals, regardless of their political identity.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Prime Minister emphasized that police should not consider anyone’s political identity when dealing with crime. “Whoever commits a crime must be treated as a criminal,” he asserted, urging the police to act as protectors of the law, not of any individual or political party. Addressing senior police officers at the Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office during Police Week 2026, Rahman reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and terrorism.

The Prime Minister highlighted the evolving nature of crime due to technological advancements, noting that police operations now extend beyond traditional boundaries. He called for a multi-skilled police force capable of tackling transnational organized crime and emphasized professionalism in all police roles.

Rahman urged against compromising professionalism for promotions or preferred postings, stressing the importance of seriousness in carrying out police duties. He reminded officers that power and positions are temporary, seeking a commitment to maintaining law and order in the country.

The Prime Minister underscored the role of the police in safeguarding citizens’ democratic rights while maintaining communal harmony. He stressed the importance of a lawful and humane relationship between the police and the public, emphasizing the police’s role as a reflection of the government.

Rahman reaffirmed the government’s commitment to its election manifesto and the July Charter, aiming to provide social security for all citizens. He acknowledged economic inequality as a catalyst for crime and outlined government initiatives to reduce disparity and enhance citizens’ welfare.

The Prime Minister pledged continued support for police welfare, advocating honesty, merit, and efficiency in recruitment and administration. He concluded with a call for collective progress, aligning with the slogan “Amaar Police, Amar Desh, Sobar Agee Bangladesh (My Police, My Country; Bangladesh First).”

The event commenced with religious recitations and a documentary on police contributions during the Liberation War, followed by police officials presenting their demands to the Prime Minister. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Home Secretary Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir, and Additional IGP AKM Awlad Hossain also addressed the gathering.

Prime Minister Rahman later participated in a photo session with police officers at the PMO’s Tiger Gate, following the launch of the four-day Police Week-2026 at the Rajarbagh Police Lines ground.
