Govt-Opposition Consensus Key to Resolving National Issues: Chief Whip

Dhaka: Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni emphasized that reaching a consensus between the ruling party and the opposition can effectively address numerous challenges facing the nation. “To institutionalise democracy, Parliament must be strengthened. When the opposition and the ruling parties reach a consensus in Parliament, many problems are solved. The formation of a special committee on energy has solved the country’s energy problems,” he stated.



According to United News of Bangladesh, Moni made these remarks during a courtesy call by a delegation from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Bangladesh, at his office. He highlighted the significance of mutual trust, stating that without it, progressing the country would be challenging. Moni asserted that democracy is essential for ensuring good governance.



Addressing the current challenges, Moni acknowledged that Bangladesh is confronting various environmental and economic issues. He mentioned that the government is providing financial support to alleviate poverty through initiatives such as the Family Card and Farmers’ Card. Additionally, the government has launched programmes like tree plantation and canal excavation to safeguard the environment.



The meeting covered a range of topics, including the strengthening of Parliament, e-governance, e-parliament, poverty alleviation, environmental development, freedom of speech, parliamentary sessions, and rules of procedure. Representing the UNDP at the meeting were Assistant Resident Representative Anowarul Haq, Assistant Programme Adviser (Governance) Dragan Popovic, and Project Manager Mahmudul Hasan.
