Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon announced that the government has initiated the process of forming a Media Commission to establish an independent and responsible media framework in the country. The minister made the announcement at a discussion held to mark World Press Freedom Day 2026, emphasizing the government’s role as a facilitator rather than a controller of the media environment.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the theme for this year’s observance in Bangladesh is ‘Independent and Responsible Media: A Key Partner in Establishing a Culture of Accountability.’ The minister highlighted the complexity of the media sector and the government’s intent to avoid unilateral decisions.
Swapon revealed plans to form an advisory committee led by a widely accepted media expert. The committee will include representatives from various sectors, and its recommendations will guide the establishment of a permanent Media Commission. This initiative aims to ensure full media freedom and protection.
The minister assured continued dialogue with stakeholders like the Editors’ Council, journalists’ organizations, and media owners. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to journalists’ safety and legal protection, stating that no journalist would face imprisonment without cause.
Swapon acknowledged the evolving global media landscape, noting challenges posed by digital platforms and AI. He stressed the importance of media freedom and responsibility, committing to support fearless and unbiased journalism.
To address misinformation, Swapon called for robust fact-checking mechanisms. He emphasized that the media plays a crucial role in balancing state and society and promised policy support.
Bangladesh Press Council Chairman Justice A K M Abdul Hakim echoed the importance of media freedom, linking it with democracy and rule of law. He stressed journalists’ duties and responsibilities in maintaining order.
The event featured a keynote by S M Shamim Reza from the University of Dhaka. Other speakers included leaders from media organizations and the Jatiya Press Club. The program began with a rally attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and its affiliated departments.
