Dhaka: Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman on Thursday urged the government to curb extortion, improve law and order, and take visible steps to implement the Teesta project soon. ‘Extortionists cannot belong to any party. These are ‘imposter’ in the name of a party. Let us take a vow in this parliament to identify them. We’ll eliminate the extortionists from Bangladesh at any cost,’ he stated during a parliamentary discussion.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Rahman emphasized the need for special attention to vulnerable areas where the law and order situation is fragile, calling upon the Home Minister to prioritize these regions. He also highlighted the necessity of keeping educational institutions free from violence, echoing public sentiments against repeated incidents.

Rahman expressed frustration regarding the Teesta project, urging the government to move beyond promises and take credible actions towards implementation. He assured that citizens would support the government if it took bold and effective steps, despite potential opposition.

Touching on the 1972 Constitution, Rahman criticized past violations of voting rights and defended Jamaat’s acceptance of the existing Constitution, while advocating for its reform through lawful means. He also reiterated election pledges for an independent foreign policy focused on national interests.

The opposition leader accused some senior BNP leaders of promising Awami League members legal protection before elections, asserting that crimes committed during the previous regime should be prosecuted. Additionally, he condemned indecent social media behavior targeting the Prime Minister’s family, urging the government to take action against such practices.
