Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today called for Jamaat-e-Islami to clarify its stance on the implementation of Sharia law in Bangladesh, amidst ongoing ambiguity and public concern regarding their political intentions.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Swapon raised this issue while addressing a memorial meeting at the National Press Club in honor of the 17th death anniversary of former minister and national leader Late Sunil Gupta. In his speech, Swapon questioned whether Jamaat-e-Islami intends to operate within the existing constitutional framework or if they aim to gain power by promising the establishment of Sharia law.

Swapon’s remarks were prompted by a recent parliamentary discussion where members of the opposition, particularly the 11-party alliance including Jamaat-e-Islami representatives, advocated for the establishment of Sharia. However, he highlighted a contradictory assurance given by Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman to a Christian delegation, stating that they would not pursue Sharia law if they came to power.

The minister urged the media to investigate and report Jamaat’s true position, emphasizing the importance of transparency for the nation. He also analyzed Jamaat’s historical evolution, noting their initial opposition to the creation of Pakistan based on Maududi Saheb’s advocacy for an Islamic constitution, followed by their eventual acceptance of Pakistan’s state structure.

Swapon acknowledged some of Jamaat’s recent actions as positive, such as nominating candidates from non-Muslim communities, but expressed concern over the party’s current ambiguous statements. He praised the value of diversity in society, citing it as a marker of a civilized and developed state.

Reflecting on the pluralistic spirit of Bangladeshi nationalism, Swapon commended leaders like Sunil Gupta and Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman for fostering inclusivity within the political landscape. He underscored the significance of religious values, advocating for a unified presentation of these values despite differences in practice.

The memorial meeting, presided over by Babu Bijan Kanti Sarkar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, also featured speeches by Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam and BNP Chairman’s adviser Nazmul Haque Nannu. The speakers paid tribute to Sunil Gupta’s political contributions and legacy.
