Bangladesh and EU Engage in High-Level Discussions on Trade, FTA, and Rohingya Crisis

Brussels: Bangladesh and the European Union (EU) today engaged in discussions to advance trade ties, initiate Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, and address the Rohingya crisis during a high-level meeting in Brussels, reaffirming their commitment to a forward-looking partnership. Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman met with High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas, as revealed in a message received today.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting covered a wide range of areas, focusing on political, economic, and development cooperation. The discussions emphasized trade and investment, Indo-Pacific cooperation, migration, skills development, and labor standards. Both parties highlighted Bangladesh’s post-LDC transition and the importance of continued preferential market access.



The meeting also explored the initiation of negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and an Investment Protection Agreement (IPA) to further strengthen economic engagement between Bangladesh and the EU. Additionally, the two sides welcomed the new Bangladesh-EU Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) as a platform for enhancing cooperation and building a forward-looking partnership.



Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Humayun Kabir was also in attendance at the meeting, indicating the significance of the discussions for Bangladesh’s strategic international relations.
