Dhaka: The Women and Children Repression Prevention (Amendment) Bill, 2026 has been successfully passed in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) through a unanimous voice vote on Friday. The bill was introduced by State Minister for Women and Children Affairs, A Z M Zahid Hossain, with the aim of amending the existing Women and Children Repression Prevention Act of 2000.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the amendment is designed to expedite the justice process, increasing efficiency and accountability by establishing specific timeframes for investigation and trial. This change seeks to reduce delays that often cause additional suffering to victims involved in such cases. The amendment further enhances protective measures for victims, ensuring their safety, privacy, and dignity so they can engage in legal proceedings without fear or harassment.

The new law also enforces a stricter accountability framework for offenders, reinforcing a “zero tolerance” policy against violence and guaranteeing inevitable punishment. It places significant emphasis on the use of digital evidence and technology-based investigations, aiming to boost the effectiveness of both law enforcement and the judiciary.

The amendment is anticipated to improve safety for women and children in Bangladesh, bolster public trust in the justice system, and support the country’s commitment to gender equality and human rights.
