Rajshahi: Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam, Health Affairs Secretary of BNP, has stated that a measles outbreak has occurred among children in the country due to the interim government’s failure to provide vaccines on time. He made these remarks while speaking to journalists this morning after visiting Rajshahi Medical College (RAMEC) Hospital.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam revealed that the first measles case was identified in the Rohingya camps on January 4. Although the authorities were aware of the situation, complications in procuring vaccines hindered timely intervention, resulting in the current rise in infections. He noted that until 2024, vaccines were procured through a specific process, but a decision to purchase vaccines through another organization disrupted this system.
A year-long movement by those involved in the vaccination program also contributed to the disruption of immunization activities, increasing the risk of spreading infectious diseases. Dr. Rafiqul Islam urged the authorities to prioritize public interest and ensure that vaccination programs are not disrupted.
Highlighting the necessity for fresh research on the measles situation, he pointed out that although vaccines are administered to children at 9 months and 15 months of age, infections are occurring in four-month-old infants. Investigating these early infections is crucial for controlling and eliminating the disease.
Emphasizing the contagious nature of measles, Dr. Rafiqul Islam urged caution over panic, as the disease can spread from one person to 10 to 15 others. He described the situation at RMCH, noting that the hospital’s capacity of around 1,200 beds is currently overwhelmed with about 2,900 patients. The ICU designated for children is operating on a limited scale, with 12 babies receiving care, and early control of the disease could relieve ICU pressure.
Dr. Rafiqul Islam also mentioned that recent child deaths at the hospital are under investigation. A government-formed three-member probe committee has visited the hospital, and their report will provide a detailed understanding of the measles situation.
Earlier, Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam visited the isolation ward and ICU for children infected with measles at the hospital, accompanied by RMCH Director Brigadier General P.K.M. Masud-ul-Islam, concerned officials, and physicians.
