Savar: Jahangirnagar University (JU) today observed the 56th Independence and National Day. In the morning, JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan placed a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar, paying homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Vice-Chancellor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, while speaking on the occasion, emphasized the significance of Independence Day as a representation of national identity and democratic aspirations. He remarked on the spirit of the Liberation War being foundational to Bangladesh's birth and urged the nation to uphold this spirit for future progress. He noted, "Past movements and struggles remind us that people seek peaceful democratic progress, not conflict."
Dr Ahsan further highlighted the importance of collective efforts between the government and opposition, stressing the need to avoid corruption and promote governance based on merit and morality. He expressed confidence that such efforts could lead to the development of a democratic Bangladesh.
The commemorative event saw participation from the Teachers' Association, Ladies' Club, Journalists' association, JUCSU, Officers' Association, Employees' Association and Union, along with various halls and departments, all of whom placed wreaths at the memorial to honor the fallen heroes.
Present at the event were Pro-VC (Academic) Prof Dr Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Dr Sohel Ahmed, Treasurer Prof Dr M AbdurRab, deans of different faculties, the acting registrar, hall provosts, proctor, teachers, officers, and employees.
Earlier in the day, at dawn, the national flag was ceremoniously hoisted at the administrative building. Pro-VC (Academic) Prof Dr Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman raised the national flag, while Treasurer Prof Dr M AbdurRab hoisted the university flag, witnessed by Acting Registrar A B M Azizur Rahman and other officials.
