Dhaka: The nation today celebrated the 56th Independence and National Day by paying homage to the heroes of the 1971 Liberation War, whose sacrifices enabled the creation of an independent Bangladesh through the defeat of Pakistani forces.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, March 26 annually recalls the dark chapter in history that commenced on March 25, 1971, leading to a nine-month long struggle that culminated in independence on December 16 of the same year. This year’s celebrations saw people from various walks of life gathering at the National Memorial in Savar to honor the nation’s brave sons with floral tributes.
From early morning, political leaders, social organizations, and citizens assembled in groups at the memorial, bearing national flags, flowers, banners, and festoons. As the day unfolded, the Shaheed Bedi was adorned with flowers, while many attendees wore red and green clothing to mark the occasion.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman led the tributes by laying wreaths at the National Memorial. High-profile attendees included Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, cabinet members, military chiefs, senior BNP leaders, war-wounded freedom fighters, and diplomats. The government organized nationwide programs to observe the day respectfully, with both the President and Prime Minister issuing separate commemorative messages.
The day’s events began with gun salutes in all districts and upazilas, including Dhaka. The national flag was raised on government and private buildings at sunrise, and similar activities were held at Bangladesh missions abroad. Public gatherings featured the national anthem, rallies, and student displays, while educational institutions held essay, recitation, and painting contests.
Internationally, Bangladesh’s missions marked the day with comparable ceremonies. Ships of the Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard were opened to the public at various ports and ghats. Prime Minister Rahman released a commemorative postage stamp, and sporting events were held across the country.
Media outlets broadcast special programs and films on the Liberation War, and museums offered free admission. Cultural events, prayers for the martyrs, and community feasts in public institutions were part of the day’s agenda.
In districts across Bangladesh, similar events unfolded. Shariatpur’s administration and citizens honored martyrs at the Shaheed Minar, while Tangail featured gun salutes, flag hoisting, and student parades. Bogura celebrated with parades and wreath-laying, and Sherpur hosted cultural competitions and tributes.
Feni saw thousands paying respect at the Liberation War Memorial, while Munshiganj organized parades, exhibitions, and prayers. Bagerhat honored freedom fighters and engaged youth in cultural programs. Netrokona’s observance included gun salutes, flag hoisting, and community receptions.
Nationwide, citizens reaffirmed their respect for the martyrs, celebrated independence, and inspired the younger generation to embrace patriotism and unity.
