Dinajpur: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday pledged to transform Bangladesh into a prosperous and strong nation with the support of its citizens. He announced the launch of a nationwide canal restoration program during a public rally near the Sahapara canal in Kaharol upazila of Dinajpur.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of people's support in nation-building efforts, highlighting the canal excavation program as a key initiative. He encouraged citizens to be cautious of those who might attempt to destabilize the country with misleading narratives.
Rahman stated, "We want to create a Bangladesh where people can assert their own rights and where the country will be strong both economically and politically." He stressed that the people of Bangladesh are the true owners of the nation and their involvement is crucial for its development.
Reflecting on the country's history, he praised the efforts of those who fought for independence and contributed to agricultural advancements. He called for public vigilance against those who spread falsehoods and disrupt national progress.
The government's plans, according to Rahman, aim to benefit farmers, empower women, improve healthcare, enhance education, and create job opportunities in agriculture and industry. He reiterated the need for public support to implement these plans successfully.
Highlighting the economic impact of the canal restoration, Rahman stated that the Sahapara canal would irrigate around 1,200 hectares of land, benefiting 31,000 farmers and potentially increasing crop production by 60,000 metric tonnes.
Further, the Prime Minister outlined other initiatives such as agricultural loan waivers, agriculture card distribution, and employment opportunities, all aimed at improving citizens' lives. The focus remains on strengthening agriculture, particularly in rural areas where most Bangladeshis reside.
Plans to develop agro-based industries were also discussed, with discussions underway with major agro-processing companies to establish mills in regions like Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, and Panchagarh.
The rally, organized by the Water Resources Ministry and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), featured speeches from several ministers. The canal restoration program, initiated by the Prime Minister, follows a legacy set by his father, President Ziaur Rahman, who originally excavated the Sahapara canal in 1977.
The Prime Minister's actions, including cutting soil with a spade and planting trees along the canal banks, symbolize the BNP's commitment to fulfilling election pledges and prioritizing national development.
