Zurich: FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed that US President Donald Trump has assured him that Iran’s national football team will be permitted to travel to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between the two nations.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Infantino discussed the upcoming tournament with Trump, who confirmed that the Iranian team would be allowed entry into the country to compete. The World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to take place from June 11 to July 19, with Iran scheduled to play its group matches in the US. The Iranian team will face New Zealand in Inglewood, California, on June 15, Belgium on June 21, and Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
Despite recent concerns expressed by Iranian officials regarding their participation due to the ongoing conflict, Infantino emphasized the importance of global events like the World Cup in fostering unity. He expressed gratitude for Trump’s support during their meeting, where they also discussed the current situation in Iran.
In the past, Iranian fans encountered restrictions under an initial travel ban by the Trump administration. However, the assurance from Trump signifies a positive step towards ensuring Iran’s participation in the tournament.
FIFA World Cup chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi stated earlier that the tournament’s significance prevents any postponement due to the US and Israeli conflict with Iran. Schirgi assured that FIFA is monitoring the situation closely but remains optimistic that the World Cup will proceed as planned, with hopes for a resolution to the conflict.
