Sylhet: Commerce, Industries, and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir today emphasized the government’s focus on enhancing irrigation facilities to boost agricultural production. He highlighted that many agricultural lands in the Sylhet region face reduced crop yields during the dry season due to inadequate irrigation water. To tackle this issue, a canal approximately six kilometres long will be excavated from Jangail to Bolaura.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister shared these insights while laying the foundation stone for the ‘Excavation of Bangshi Khal from Jangail Surma River to Bolaura Jilkar Haor’ project in Sylhet Sadar upazila. The initiative aims to bring nearly 6,000 hectares of agricultural land under irrigation, allowing farmers to grow additional crops, thereby increasing their income and contributing to enhanced national food production.

Muktadir stated that the newly elected government is actively working to fulfill its election promises. Within just 21 days of taking office, it has launched various development programmes. Among these initiatives is the Family Card distribution programme, which has already commenced in different regions.

He assured that the development plans promised before the election will be executed progressively, aiming to uplift the living standards of people nationwide, including those in Sylhet. Following his remarks, the commerce minister officially inaugurated the excavation work of the Bangshi Khal.

The event was attended by Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam, Sylhet Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Khoshnur Rubaiyat, and other local dignitaries.
