Four Accused in Murder of IU Teacher

Kushtia: A case has been filed with the local police station naming four individuals accused of the murder of Asma Sadia Runa, who was the chairperson and assistant professor of the Social Welfare Department at Islami University (IU).



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the victim’s husband, Md. Imtiaz Sultan, lodged the case at the university police station earlier today. The accused include university employee Fazlur Rahman, former Assistant Registrar of the Social Welfare Department Biswajit Kumar Biswas, Assistant Professor Shyam Sundar Sarkar, and Assistant Professor Md. Habibur Rahman. Md. Masud Rana, the Officer-in-Charge of the Islami University Police Station, confirmed the filing of the case.



Following the post-mortem, Asma Sadia Runa’s body was returned to her family from the Kushtia General Hospital morgue around 10:00 am. Her colleagues and relatives have called for severe punishment for those responsible for her death. The deceased’s Janaza is scheduled to take place at Central Eidgah field after the Zohr prayer, after which she will be laid to rest at the Kushtia Municipal Graveyard.



Asma Sadia Runa resided in the Kushtia Government College Mor area and was a mother to three daughters and one son. The incident occurred when Fazlur Rahman allegedly stabbed her while she was in her office at the Social Welfare Department within the Theology and Islamic Studies Faculty building. Rahman subsequently attempted suicide by stabbing himself in the neck and is currently receiving medical treatment at Kushtia General Hospital.
