Dhaka: More than 4 million taxpayers have submitted their income tax returns online for the 2025-26 tax year so far, reflecting a sharp rise in the use of the electronic filing system, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

According to United News of Bangladesh, the revenue authority stated in a press release issued on Wednesday that nearly 5 million taxpayers have registered in the e-return system since August 4, 2025. Out of these, over 4 million have already filed their returns online. The mandatory online submission for all individual taxpayers, except certain exempted groups, has contributed to this increase.

The NBR data indicates a steady rise in monthly e-return submissions, with significant increases in November and December 2025. By comparison, the previous year saw 1,399,655 taxpayers filing e-returns within the stipulated time, showing a notable year-on-year increase in digital compliance.

Of the total e-returns submitted, 2,866,618 were filed by male taxpayers and 1,136,003 by female taxpayers. A significant number of these taxpayers reported income below the taxable threshold. In different income brackets, the number of male taxpayers consistently exceeded that of female taxpayers.

The NBR has provided an option for Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad to apply for online filing by sending relevant identification details to a designated email. Authorized representatives can also submit e-returns on behalf of taxpayers this year.

The e-return system allows taxpayers to enter details of income, expenditure, assets, and liabilities without uploading supporting documents, facilitating tax filing from home. Payment for taxes can be made using various digital methods, and the system generates an acknowledgement slip and income tax certificate instantly.

To assist taxpayers, the NBR has established a call centre, help desks in all tax zones, and an option for submitting written complaints or queries through the official website. SMS notifications have been sent to individual taxpayers to remind them to file their e-returns by March 31, 2026, to avoid penalties.
