Dhaka: A court here today imposed a travel ban on Mohammad Abu Noman, a business partner of former finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, popularly known as Lotus Kamal, and his daughter Nafisa Kamal.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The ACC’s petition alleged that AHM Mustafa Kamal, his wife Kashmiri Kamal, and their daughters Kashfi Kamal and Nafisa Kamal amassed wealth outside legal avenues through activities such as labour syndication to Malaysia, property investments in Dubai, share manipulation, and other irregularities, subsequently laundering the funds abroad.
The ACC further highlighted that an investigation is ongoing into allegations involving Abu Noman, who is reportedly a permanent resident of Canada and Dubai. These allegations include the proposed closure of his medical check-up centers and the confiscation of his assets. The ACC stressed that the investigation holds national significance in preventing money laundering.
The petition underscored investigators’ findings that Abu Noman frequently travels abroad and might possess multiple citizenships. There are concerns that he could leave the country during the investigation, which might obstruct the ongoing probe. Consequently, the court imposed the travel restriction to ensure the inquiry is conducted without hindrance.
