Patuakhali: The shoemakers in Patuakhali are experiencing a significant increase in activity as the Eid-ul-Fitr approaches.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the workload in the workshops has surged, with leather cutting, sewing, sole application, and finishing work continuing from morning till late at night. Nayan Rishi, a 30-year-old shoemaker from a small factory in Hachan Dalal Market under Baufal Municipality, shared insights into the bustling period.

Nayan Rishi, who has been involved in the shoemaking profession for several years, follows a family tradition. He manages a factory that typically produces and sells 200 to 250 pairs of shoes per month. However, during the Eid season, this number doubles to 400 to 500 pairs, particularly in the two weeks leading up to the festival. Rishi specializes in making leather slippers and other items such as half-shoes, nagra, gents’ slippers, and loafers. He sources seasoned leather from Bangshal in Dhaka to meet the local demand.

The price of leather slippers varies between Taka 400 to Taka 700, depending on quality and design. On average, five to six pairs are sold daily, but expectations are high to sell between 100 to 200 pairs daily before Eid due to increasing buyer pressure. Local buyers, such as Karim, Rahim, and Jasim, prefer hand-made leather shoes from local craftsmen for their durability and comfort at an affordable price.

The shoemaking industry in Patuakhali could see further growth with increased interest in local products, government sponsorship, and easy credit facilities. These measures would potentially enhance production capabilities and create more employment opportunities, as noted by several craftsmen in the area.
