Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announced that the government has sanctioned the withdrawal of 1,202 additional politically motivated cases that have been filed over the past 17 years against opposition leaders, party activists, and others.
According to United News of Bangladesh, this recent decision follows an earlier approval for the withdrawal of 1,006 such cases. The Home Minister clarified that cases involving murder, drugs, arms, explosives, and violence against women and children have been excluded from this withdrawal initiative, focusing solely on politically motivated cases.
The Minister also revealed that the government is actively pursuing further withdrawals of similar cases. He emphasized that each case will undergo a thorough verification process to confirm its political nature. To prevent abuse of this initiative, a committee will be established, and a decision will be made soon regarding the formation and responsibilities of this committee.
In response to inquiries about cases filed after August 5, 2024, Salahuddin Ahmed noted that some of these cases involved ordinary and innocent individuals who were wrongfully accused for personal gain. He mentioned that some privileged groups were responsible for filing these cases, which are currently under review.
The Home Minister reiterated the government's commitment to upholding the rule of law and assured that efforts will continue to prevent individuals from suffering due to unnecessary politically motivated cases.
