Dhaka: Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on Sunday emphasized Bangladesh’s intent to develop a ‘forward-looking and balanced partnership’ with India, prioritizing mutual interest for the benefit of both nations’ citizens. Both countries have agreed to maintain regular and constructive engagement to further enhance their bilateral relationship.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma extended an invitation from Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to Dr. Khalilur Rahman for an official visit to New Delhi at an early date. During a discussion with reporters, Verma expressed eagerness to work with Bangladesh in a forward-looking manner, strengthening people-centric cooperation across various domains.
Verma highlighted the importance of people-to-people exchanges as a crucial component of bilateral relations, expressing optimism about future collaborations. The High Commissioner reiterated India’s readiness to engage with the new government in Bangladesh, focusing on mutual benefit and interest.
During his visit, Verma also met with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed. He described the meeting as a courtesy call and an opportunity for initial exchanges of views, given the formation of the new government in Bangladesh.
The High Commissioner mentioned the recent high-level communications between the two countries following the elections. On February 13, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, and the two leaders had a phone conversation later that day.
Further, on February 17, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha visited Dhaka to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new government, representing India. The Speaker also held a bilateral meeting with the new Prime Minister, delivering a letter from Prime Minister Modi to Prime Minister Rahman.
In these communications, India expressed its desire to build on historic ties with Bangladesh and strengthen multifaceted bilateral relations. Verma emphasized India’s commitment to supporting a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh.
