Rangpur: The Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day-2026 was observed today at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) with due dignity, paying rich tribute to the Language Movement martyrs. The observance began with Vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Md Showkat Ali laying a wreath at the Shaheed Minar of the university at one minute past midnight, paying deep respect to the 1952 Language Movement martyrs. A one-minute silence was observed in memory of the language martyrs.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, in the morning, participants wore black badges and the national flag was lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect. The Vice-chancellor later inaugurated a mourning procession in memory of the language martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Bangla language. This procession, joined by teachers, students, officers, and employees of various faculties and departments, started from the south gate of the university's administrative building. It moved around the park intersection (Abu Sayeed Square), circled the main roads of the campus, and concluded at the Shaheed Minar Square.
The Vice-chancellor placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar, joined by deans of various faculties, departments, residential halls, institutes, and social and cultural organizations of the university. A discussion was organized at the cafeteria to mark the day, with the Vice-chancellor attending as the chief guest. The convener of the Great Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day-2026 Celebration Committee, Associate Professor Md Masud Rana, chaired the session. Dr. Md Moniruzzaman, Associate Professor of the Department of History and Archaeology, delivered the main presentation.
Several other faculty members addressed the event, including Professor Dr. Md Tajul Islam from the Department of Mathematics, Registrar (Additional Responsibilities) and Proctor Professor Dr. Md Ferdous Rahman, Head of the Department of Political Science Dr. Md Tanziul Islam, and Associate Professor of the Department of Chemistry Dr. Md Harun-al-Rashid. Additionally, a milad and dua mehfil were held at the university's central mosque after the Zuhr prayers, seeking divine peace for the departed souls of the martyrs of the great language movement.
