Rangpur: A discussion meeting, reception of language soldiers, and award distribution were held in Rangpur city on the occasion of the Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day-2026. Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md Shahidul Islam was present at the event organized by the district administration at the Rangpur District Shilpokola Academy Auditorium in the city today. Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Enamul Ahsan presided over the programme.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Divisional Commissioner emphasized the importance of preserving the culture of the Bangla language. He remarked on the historical significance of the language movement of February 21, 1952, which aimed to establish Bengali as the state language. He stressed the necessity for everyone at all levels in the country to properly practice the Bengali language and urged people to work for the country’s development by adopting the ideals of language soldiers.
Speaking at the event, Rangpur-3 constituency MP Md Mahbubur Rahman Belal highlighted the unique sacrifice of the Bangalees for their language, noting that no other nation has given their lives for such a cause. He expressed concern over the insufficient space given to the Bengali language across various sectors, including offices and public places, where incorrect Bengali spelling and English-written banners are prevalent. He called for a deeper appreciation and integration of the Bengali language in daily life.
The event also featured addresses from Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali, Rangpur Additional Superintendent of Police Md Joynal Abedin, and Language Soldier Mohammad Afzal, among others. Language Soldier Mohammad Afzal was felicitated, and prizes were distributed among the winners of drawing, writing, and recitation competitions. Cultural programmes were also organized to mark the day.
