Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stated that the newly elected government will prioritize restoring peace and security through enhanced law enforcement and anti-corruption measures, ensuring that all citizens, irrespective of their voting choices, will have equal rights. In a televised address to the nation, he emphasized that whether citizens voted for the BNP, did not vote at all, or voted for other parties, their rights remain equal under his government.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman affirmed that the BNP government acknowledges differing political views, religious beliefs, and ideologies but stressed that the state belongs to all its citizens. He reiterated that all Bangladeshis have equal rights as citizens of the nation. In his first national address as Prime Minister, he highlighted that the new government is beginning its term amid an economy weakened by corruption, poor governance, and a declining law-and-order situation.

Tarique underscored that restoring public peace and security by improving law enforcement and controlling corruption is the government’s main priority. He identified the spread of gambling and drugs as significant contributors to the law-and-order issues and assured that law enforcement agencies are taking necessary measures to address these problems. He stressed that all institutions will operate under established rules and that the rule of law will prevail over any political influence.

After his oath-taking as Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman paid tribute to the martyrs at the National Martyrs’ Memorial and visited the graves of former leaders Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. His address to the nation was part of his first day in office, which included working at the Secretariat and presiding over a Cabinet meeting.

Expressing gratitude for the country’s independence and sovereignty, Tarique extended congratulations to the nation, marking the beginning of what he termed a restoration of democracy and people’s rights. He asserted that the country belongs to all citizens, regardless of their political, religious, or ethnic identity, and the government aims to create a self-reliant, secure, and democratic Bangladesh.

Regarding market control, Tarique urged businesses not to exploit the holy month of Ramadan for excessive profit-making. He called on traders to ensure that essential commodities remain affordable for ordinary citizens. The government, he stated, is committed to protecting the interests of both businesses and consumers, and is open to suggestions for maintaining market stability.

Tarique also addressed the need for uninterrupted utilities during Ramadan and highlighted the importance of austerity. He encouraged restraint in the use of resources such as gas, electricity, and water and set an example by urging government officials to practice austerity.

He further addressed the issue of traffic congestion, particularly in Dhaka, and announced plans to enhance the nationwide railway system to reduce the population pressure on the capital. Additionally, he highlighted the potential of transforming the large population into skilled human resources, which would become a national asset.

Finally, Tarique reiterated his commitment to implementing the government’s plans, as outlined before the national elections, and expressed readiness to deliver on the promises made to the electorate.
