Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman today underscored the inherent link between honesty and the role of a judge, issuing a stern warning that corruption will not be tolerated within the judicial system. “Judge means honest. The very word carries the quality of integrity,” he stated, emphasizing that those found guilty of corruption would face severe consequences, including both administrative action and criminal prosecution.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister conveyed these remarks during an introductory meeting with officials and employees from both divisions of the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs. This meeting marked his initial working day following his recent appointment and oath-taking as minister. Prior to the meeting, he received a formal welcome from the secretaries and senior officials of the ministry, as noted in an official release.

Addressing concerns about corrupt judges and officials, Asaduzzaman clarified that the concept of an “honest judge” is redundant, as honesty is intrinsic to the role. He asserted, “A judge is honest by definition. I do not want to see judges through the lens of honesty or dishonesty.”

The minister also advised those dissatisfied with their government salary to reconsider their decision to join the judiciary. He suggested that individuals who feel their salary is insufficient could explore legal practice, particularly since judges have the opportunity to practice law after retirement. “If anyone thinks they cannot manage with their salary, they don’t need to take up this job. They may choose legal practice instead,” he stated.

On the topic of corruption, the law minister delivered a strong warning, stating, “If anyone thinks they can get away with corruption, that will not happen here. Anyone involved will face not only administrative measures but also corruption cases. Everyone must remember this.”
