Rangpur: All-time high prices with excellent yields of groundnut have made farmers happy in Rangpur agricultural region where harvest of groundnut continues in full swing during the current Rabi season.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, market sources said farmers are currently selling their newly harvested groundnuts to wholesalers at excellent rates between Taka 6,000 to 6,300 per mound (every 40 kg) to earn huge profits. Officials from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) noted that farmers in the region have exceeded the set target for groundnut cultivation for the first time in recent years, with cultivation of this highly profitable cash crop increasing annually.

The DAE has fixed a target of producing 12,245 tonnes of groundnut from 5,736 hectares of land for all five districts in the region during the current 2025-2026 Rabi season. “However, farmers have finally cultivated groundnut in 5,748 hectares of land, exceeding the set farming target by 12 hectares of land or 0.21 percent,” said Deputy Director of the DAE’s Rangpur region, Agriculturist Md Shirajl Islam.

Till last Tuesday, farmers had already harvested groundnuts on 3,436 hectares of land, producing 6,741 tonnes of the crop at an average yield rate of 1.96 tonnes per hectare. Officials highlighted that farmers are earning an all-time record net profit of Taka 85,000 by producing 25 to 32 mounds of groundnut per acre of land, with farming costs ranging from Taka 28,000 to Taka 32,000 on average.

“Wholesalers are buying newly harvested groundnuts from farmers at rates between Taka 6,000 and Taka 6,300 per mound (every 40 kgs) now,” groundnut trader Mokhlesur Rahman at Rangpur City Bazar told BSS. Last year, farmers sold their newly harvested groundnuts at rates between Taka 3,500 and Taka 4,000 per mound at this time of the season.

Farmers are achieving bumper groundnut yields with favorable prices following expanded cultivation of its high-yielding varieties developed by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) on the main lands and char areas. Deputy Director of the DAE’s Burirhat Horticulture Centre in Rangpur, Krishibid Dr Md Abu Sayem, mentioned that cultivation and production of groundnut are continuing to expand due to its increasing demand in the country’s burgeoning food industries.

Farmer couple Md Aminul Islam and Ummey Kulsum of Char Taluk Shahbaz village on the Teesta riverbed in Kawnia upazila of Rangpur stated that they have cultivated groundnut on two acres of sandy char lands each this season. “We are harvesting groundnuts and expecting to get a total production of 60 mounds,” Ummey Kulsum said, hoping to earn a net profit of Taka 1.60 lakh excluding production costs.

Farmers Nur Mohammad of Char Biswa Nath village and Abu Bakar of Char Gonai village in the same upazila shared that they have cultivated groundnuts on one and two acres of char land respectively on the Teesta riverbeds, spending Taka 30,000 per acre. They also expressed firm hopes to get bumper groundnut yields and lucrative market prices this season.
